What is now Watauga, TX was first settled in 1881, when the Texas and Pacific Railway came through it. It received its name from a settlement of the pre-Revolutionary War Watauga Association located near the Watauga River in East Tennessee. The population fell to under 100 during the 1930s and 1940s after the railroad station closed, but rebounded and then some beginning in the 1960s with the construction of defense plants nearby. As of the 2020 Census, the population is more than 23,500.
